When buying French lace keep in mind that authentic French laces come in 5-5.50 yard pieces (strips). Any store giving you strips of 3.50 yards is not selling you authentic French lace.

AUTHENTIC FRENCH LACES

·         Lace: Lace is a delicate fabric made of yarn or thread in an open web like pattern, made by machine or by hand. Depending on the process used it could be:

O   Needle Lace

O   Cutwork

O   Bobbin Lace

O   Tape Lace

O   Knotted Lace

O   Crocheted Lace

O   Knitted Lace

O   Machine-Made

O   Chemical Lace


·         Chantilly Lace: Created in the 17th century, produced in France on special machines making it in strips of approximately 5 to 5.50 yards.

·         Alençon Lace: Originated in Alençon, France. Also called point d'Alençon. A delicate needlepoint lace having a solid design outlined with twisted yarn on a background of hexagonal mesh

·         Lace Applique: Motifs of bobbin or needle lace attached to the net ground.

·         GuipureA coarse large-patterned lace without a net background could be made out of, rayon, cotton, etc.

·         Motif: An individual decorative element, linked by net or bars.

·         Scallop: A decorative border formed with semicircles.

·         Tulle: A fabric consisting of a very fine, sheer net. Also used later to describe machine lace.

·         Venice lace A machine-made imitation of Venetian point made by the burnt-out process

·         Valenciennes: A fine bobbin lace

·         Brussels lace: Any of various fine needlepoint or bobbin laces with floral designs made originally in or near Brussels

·         Mechlin: A delicate bobbin lace used for dresses and millinery used mostly in the 18th century

·         Switzerland: The bobbin lace of the 17th century

·         Bobbin lace: A lace textile made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread, which are wound on bobbins to manage them. As the work progresses, the weaving is held in place with pins set in a lace pillow, the placement of the pins usually determined by a pattern or pricking pinned on the pillow.
